Before you write to the newsroom

Most messages reach us in better shape when the sender has already gathered a few things. Nothing below is a rule you have to satisfy. It is simply what helps a pitch, a correction, or a letter get read properly instead of bouncing around the desk.

Length and format

A review pitch usually works as a short paragraph: the book or film, why it belongs in the paper now, and roughly how long you imagine the piece. Long-form criticism can run several thousand words; a correction is often two lines. Send plain text in the body of the message rather than a document, and keep the subject line specific.

Timing

Weekly columns close earlier than essays, and convention dispatches are tied to the event calendar. If your piece depends on a release date or a fair, say so in the first sentence. There is no fixed deadline we can promise you here, and no reply schedule attached to this form.

Materials and sources

For reviews, name the edition and the translator if there is one. For corrections, quote the sentence and the issue it appeared in. For letters intended for the letters section, note that contributors edit that page by hand, so a submission may be selected, shortened, or held for a later installment.

Photographs and images

If you are sending images of a zine table, a print run, or a cover in progress, describe what the picture shows and who took it. We cannot accept files through this form, so mention what you have and we will say whether it is worth sending another way.

What you want to happen

Close with the outcome you are after: a review assignment, a correction noted, a letter considered for print. Being plain about that saves everyone a round of guessing.

Write to the newsroom

One form reaches the editors. Use it for a review pitch, a correction to something we published, or a letter meant for the letters page.

Submitting takes you to a page confirming the form was received. Letters are read and selected by contributors, not by an algorithm.

Where to reach the newsroom

Alienaward Press keeps one mailing address and one inbox for reader correspondence. Pitches, corrections, and letters all arrive the same way, and the letters section is read and selected by contributors rather than by software.

The address above is a mailing address for correspondence only. We do not describe it as a place to visit, and nothing here should be read as an invitation to stop by. For pitches, corrections, or letters to the editor, use the form on this page.

Alienaward Press keeps one inbox for correspondence: pitches for reviews, corrections to something we published, and letters meant for the letters page. The letters section is read and selected by contributors, not by a ranking system, so what arrives here is looked at by people who follow the beat.
