Why we keep a paper for the strange stuff

Alienaward Press exists because speculative writing in this part of the world rarely gets the kind of attention it deserves. We are an independent newspaper, independently edited and published online, and we treat science fiction as a subject worth reporting on rather than a shelf label. The beat runs from novels and short fiction to speculative essays, indie genre film, tabletop worldbuilding, and the small-press scene that holds much of it together across Buenos Aires and Latin America.

Readers pay, not advertisers

Editorial coverage is selected independently, not determined by advertisers. Our work remains focused on readers and the subjects we cover.

Contributors edit the letters

The letters section is read and shaped by the people who write for the paper, not by a ranking system. Disagreements stay in the open, and the editorial notes that follow a letter are arguments, not verdicts.

Long-form over the quick take

We favor translation notes, behind-the-scenes reporting on zine fairs and print runs, and cover art treated as a real editorial decision. A review here is expected to say something the reader can argue with.

Before you write to the desk

Most of what readers ask about comes down to four things: what we cover, how pitches are handled, how the letters section is edited, and what the paper does not do. The notes below answer those directly. If your question is not here, the contact page is the right place to send it.

What counts as a pitch, and what should it include?

A pitch is a short outline of a piece you want to write for us, not the finished draft. Tell us the subject, the angle, and roughly how long you expect it to run. A review pitch should name the book, film, or game book and say what you plan to argue about it. We read pitches as they arrive and reply when a piece fits the current issue or a later one.

How is the letters section edited?

Contributors read the mail and select letters for each installment. We trim for length and clarity, and we add short editorial notes where a point needs context or a counter-argument. We do not run letters through an automated filter and we do not publish replies as a live thread. If your letter is selected, the edited version appears in the section with the others.

Can I send a correction?

Yes, and we prefer it. Send the piece title, the sentence in question, and what you think is wrong. Corrections to facts, names, and translation notes are handled first. If a correction changes the sense of a piece, we note it alongside the original rather than quietly rewriting the archive.

What does the weekly reading selection actually contain?

The digest gathers the week's columns, any new interview or dispatch, and a pointer to the current letters installment. It is a summary of what is already published, not a separate feed. Subscribing is handled through the contact page, and the confirmation you receive there only tells you the request reached our system.

What the paper does not offer

There are no reader accounts, live comment threads, or mailing-list signups. The only form on the site is on the contact page, and it leads to a page confirming technical receipt. We do not promise a reply by a set date, and we do not run sponsored coverage of books, films, or game books.

Still unsure where your question fits? Write to the desk through the contact page, or read how we handle submissions and reader data in our editorial and privacy notes.

An independent newspaper for science fiction and speculative culture

Alienaward Press is independently edited and published online, with a beat that runs from science fiction literature and speculative essays to indie genre film, tabletop worldbuilding, and the small-press publishing scene across Buenos Aires and Latin America.

The newsroom keeps a weekly rhythm: columns, author interviews, convention dispatches, and short fiction reprints, alongside long-form criticism, translation notes, and behind-the-scenes reporting on zine fairs, print runs, and cover art. We are not a platform and we do not run accounts. What we publish is edited by people who read the submissions, argue about them, and sign off on the final text.
